Emergency contraception
If you have had unprotected sex or you think your contraception may have failed you can usually prevent pregnancy by using emergency contraception.
There are 2 types of emergency contraception: the emergency contraceptive pill (the morning after pill) and the intrauterine device (IUD). The IUD is the most effective method of emergency contraception.
Remember, emergency contraception is most effective when used as soon as possible after unprotected sex and no later than 5 days after, and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Or alternatively, if you are under 25 years old OR are entitled to free prescriptions you can access the Pharmacy EHC scheme This service provides the morning after pill (Levonorgestrel 1500) which is effective up to 3 days after unprotected sex. This service is free and confidential.
Many people will know emergency contraception as ‘the morning after pill’. This is used by a woman to reduce the risk of pregnancy after having unprotected sex, or if another method of contraception has failed, eg, if a condom splits or you have missed a pill. However, it does not protect against STIs.

What we offer:
The morning-after pill
The morning-after pill (Levonelle). This can be taken up to three days (72 hours) after unprotected sex. It is up to 95% effective within 24 hours after sex, and 56% effective if taken between 48 and 72 hours after sex. The morning-after pill will not protect you against further unprotected sex.
The morning-after pill is available to those of you who come to our a walk-in service.
EllaOne
A pill that can be taken up to five days after unprotected sex. It is up to 95% effective however it will not protect you against further unprotected sex.
IUD / coil
A device the size of a matchstick that is inserted into the womb to prevent pregnancy. It is up to 99.9% effective.
Unfortunately, we do not provide emergency IUD fittings.
